A UK chemical plant has found success with the Genie GTH-4018 R, the second largest rotating telehandler built by Terex Aerial Work Platforms (AWP).

The machine is is working in confined areas within the plant, and is doing the work that previously was carried out by three machines – two cranes and a fixed telehandler.

For the installation of new processing equipment, local rental company Sangwin Plant Hire Ltd had initially planded to use a 25t crane and a fixed telehandler, but a study showed that the ground in certain areas of the plant would not be able to take the crane’s weight.

The four-tonne capacity GTH-4018 R, with four metre jib and winch attachments, and weighing 10 t less than a 25-t capacity class crane, is working moving material from the storage compound to the gasholder. The heavy lifting rotating telehandler is unloading components weighing up to 1t, carry them to the jobsite, raising them to a height of 21m at 6 to 10 metres outreach, and placing them in position ready for fixing.

Not having to use the two cranes that would have been required otherwise has led to a signficant reduction in costs.

“The GTH-4018 R is intuitive and straightforward to operate,” says Andrew Fenton, operations director of Sangwin Plant Hire. “Once we had trained our customer’s operators on its capabilities and limitations, they were safe to begin work as planned almost immediately.”

“Requiring only one operator, the GTH-4018 R rapidly proved itself to be a much faster and versatile alternative to our initial one or two crane and fixed telehandler solution – which is saving our customer up to £1000 ($1600) a week,” he said.
