UAE professional drivers to face medical tests

New federal law set to come into effect by 2013 and will be mandatory for all drivers

Heavy vehicle operators will have to face mandatory, annual medical tests from 2013.

A new UAE federal law has been passed which stipulates that professional drivers will have to pass an annual, mandatory medical test to obtain the necessary permits to work in the country, it was announced on Sunday.

According to a report by Gulf News, the legislation will come into effect by 2013 and will require all professional drivers to obtain a permit that will be renewed every year. It covers categories such taxi drivers, bus drivers and heavy vehicles operators.

The new law will prohibit drivers with health conditions, such as heart ailments, diabetes and epilepsy from continuing with their jobs, a report by Gulf News said.

Chauffeurs and domestic drivers will also come under the purview of the law, the report added.
