Thief managed to get to Al Ain but couldn’t escape the long arm of the law.

A Tunisian national has been sentenced to two years in jail after being found guilty for the theft of excavator belonging to the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai.

The Dubai Criminal Court stated that the 26 year old stole the excavator from Dubai before hiding it in Al Ain.

Police authorities in both Dubai and Al Ain worked together to run surveillance to a track down the machine.

An emirati police officer told the court that a tip-off had been received that the Caterpillar excavator was in Al Ain

“During a police search, we spotted a Honda vehicle driven around the area in a suspicious manner,” he said. “Subsequent investigations revealed that he had rented it. An ambush was organised. Upon his arrest, the police confiscated the counterfeit certificate from his car.”

A Pakistani driver testified that he had agreed to drive the excavator from the Al Qusais area of Dubai to Al Ain City.

“He offered me Dhs1,500 and gave me its keys,” he told the court. “He was accompanied by an unidentified person. They showed me the certificate as a proof that the Caterpillar belonged to [him].”

The thief will be deported to Tunisia after the conclusion of his incarceration.
