UAE-based System Construct has beaten off its rivals to win the $27 million contract for the construction of phase 1 of pre-built warehousing (PBWH) at Kizad, the new industrial and logistics zone at Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port.

System Construct has expertise in building warehouses, residential and commercial buildings, malls, offices, factories, schools and has also been involved in infrastructure projects in the UAE. The company was also responsible for the construction of Kizad’s existing show warehouse – the first of its kind in the Middle East.

Kizad expects the delivery of the first units to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2013.

The PBWH project has been divided into three phases, with a total of 105 units, covering 118,965m2. The first phase, now underway, covers an area of 46,453m2.

“We have been encouraged, not just by the significant interest shown in our pre-built warehouse project, but also by the uptake and commitments we have seen from both local and international companies,” said Charles Acworth, head of project development at Kizad.

Commenting on the key milestone at the start of construction of the PBWH phase 1 development he added: “The show warehouse has been an invaluable marketing tool and System Construct delivered a quality product on time and to budget.  The announcement of the main contract award to System Construct is therefore very welcome and is the first of many milestones we will be announcing in the coming months.”

Ziad Shebli, operations manager of System Construct LLC, said the company was “delighted” to have been chosen as main contractor for the first phase of Kizad’s pre-built warehousing project.

“We are confident that our experience and proven track record in other key construction projects was our differentiator in being awarded this contract and we look forward to being a part of Kizad’s unique investment and industrial offering,” he said.

Kizad is part of the Abu Dhabi Ports Company’s huge AED 26.5bn (USD7.2bn) investment in its new maritime gateway and the industrial and commercial zones for the emirate of Abu Dhabi. That figure includes both the first phase of Kizad’s infrastructure and the adjacent deep-water, Khalifa Port. Now fully operational, it is currently the only deep-water port in the region with a semi-automated container terminal.

The area for the first phase of the industrial zone in Kizad covers an area of 52 sq.km. The second phase stands at a massive 366 sq.km area – approximately two-thirds the land-mass of Singapore.
