RTA awards $45m road works contract

Project will construct two flyovers, with two signalised junctions built at intersections

RTA will build two flyovers to clear up congestion on Sheikh Zayed Road

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has awarded a $45.4m contract for the widening and improving of the Umm Suqeim Road, stretching from Sheikh Zayed Road up to Al Khail Road, it was announced on Saturday.

According to a report by Gulf News, the project aims to separate traffic crossing from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road from local traffic. This will be done by constructing two flyovers, Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the RTA Board and executive director of the RTA, said.

“Each flyover will have three lanes in each direction. Two more signalized junctions will be built at the intersection with Al Asayel Road and Al Khail Road, to ensure free traffic movement in all directions,” he added.

The project t will also include the construction of service roads and car parks on both roadsides by the business outlets to serve showrooms at Al Barsha and Al Quoz Industrial Areas.

The construction of the three bridges, pavements and two signalised pedestrian crossings will also help step up the safety levels in the area, the newspaper report said.

Divided into four phases, the project will cost $45.4m and is considered one of RTA’s biggest projects, said Al Tayer.

“The importance of the project is underlined by its nature as an extension of the Business Bay crossing and its role in realising RTA’s endeavours to open up auxiliary traffic corridors to Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road,” he explained.
