Abu Dhabi announces Phase 2 of the Noor street lighting project
Phase 2 of the Noor Abu Dhabi project will light up 140,000 streetlights, and will be able to save 2,400 million kWh of electricity
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced Phase 2 of the Noor Abu Dhabi street lighting project.
The public private partnership (PPP) project will be executed through the Abu Dhabi City Municipality and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).
The size of the project is more than three times that of Phase 1 and will result in significant electricity savings of almost 2,400 million kWh and a reduction of approximately 76% in power consumption, according to the ADIO. This is equivalent to cost savings of $191 million, throughout the 12-year concession agreement.
Phase 2 follows the commercial closure of the Phase 1 tender, the first PPP project of its kind in the UAE and the region. Phase 2 will see approximately 140,000 of Abu Dhabi’s streetlights replaced with LED-lights.
Dr Tariq Bin Hendi, director general for ADIO, said: “ADIO will continue to support the delivery of this important project for Abu Dhabi by collaborating with all parties as we move to the implementation stage of Phase One and the launch of Phase Two.”
Meanwhile, Mohamed Al Dhaheri, head of ADIO’s Infrastructure Partnerships, commented: “Reaching this landmark milestone for Phase 1 sets the legal, financial and technical basis for the next phases of the ‘Noor Abu Dhabi’ project and lays the foundation for investors to execute effective partnerships with the government.”
On Phase 1 of the project, he said: “In March 2020, DMT – Abu Dhabi City Municipality awarded a contract to Tatweer for the replacement of 43,000 streetlights in the capital with energy-efficient LED lights. The tender, assisted by ADIO using Abu Dhabi’s PPP framework, was the first street lighting replacement project to be delivered using this model in the UAE.”
He further added that they are currently working on progressing several other infrastructure projects that are forecasted to be tendered in the coming months.
Tatweer’s scope of work is to execute a 12-year concession to install and maintain the street lighting system in Abu Dhabi City that will achieve energy-saving levels of about 900 million kWh over the contract period.
