ADM awards contract for streetlight LED upgrade project
The use of energy-efficient street lighting is expected to save some 900m kWh worth $72m over the 12-year contract period
43,000 streetlights in the UAE capital will be replaced by energy-efficient LED units as per Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM). ADM awarded the contract for the project to Tatweer for Traffic Assets and Systems Operation and Management.
The 12-year design, build, finance, operate and maintain concession agreement was awarded by ADM’s Department of Municipalities and Transport, following a competitive tender process facilitated by Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO).
As per a statement, the concession will target specific requirements and energy saving targets, including operating and maintaining the new devices, and installing and maintaining a smart central system to control the lighting throughout the agreement period. The project is expected to save $72m over the 12-year contract period.
“This long-term partnership with Tatweer will help ADM achieve greater project efficiencies, while delivering enhanced infrastructure and services to Abu Dhabi’s residents. It is part of our commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure in Abu Dhabi,” said director-general Saif Badr Al Qubaisi.
ADM said the tender is the first street lighting replacement project to be delivered using a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in the UAE. It is also the first to be assisted by the ADIO, using the Partnership Projects model, the authority said.
The ADIO said that it works with government departments such as the Department of Municipalities and Transport, to facilitate major infrastructure projects for Abu Dhabi through the Partnership Projects model.
The project is part of the Abu Dhabi government’s recent announcement to procure infrastructure projects worth $2.7bn through PPP spanning multiple sectors, including education, transport and municipal sectors, said a top official.
