Makkah governor calls for project completion

$26bn development will ease traffic congestion in the Holy City

The governor of Makkah has called on all parties involved in the implementation of the $26.6bn Makkah development to complete the job without delay, following concerns about the project.

The massive project includes the construction of flyovers and intersections across major roads, so as to ease traffic in the city. Furthermore, the project will see parking lots and a metro train system built. This metro system will be linked with Mashair and Haramain Railways.

In December of 2012, Makkah contractors raised fears over their ability to complete projects due to the high cost of cement, sparked by dwindling reserves.

Local contractors said at the time that more than 300 projects were at risk of suspension due to the shortage. Other contractors said that they’d been forced to turn to the black market to get the supplies they needed, so as to avoid being hit by heavy fines for missing deadlines.
