Hellberg: thyssenkrupp places great importance on climate change and energy efficiency

Exclusive: thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions’ Saudi CEO talks about driving value chain sustainability in the chemical industry

It is important to strengthen the partnership between Saudi Arabia and the private sector to achieve the goals of Vision 2030, said Volker Hellberg, CEO of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions – KSA, to MECN, while providing an overview of the organisation’s efforts to help meet the Kingdom’s rising demand for goods and services in a resource-efficient way.

In my opinion, the Kingdom is on the right track with its ambitious plans, and the first implementations look promising, he said. From a broader perspective, Hellberg added, the company attaches great importance to environmental protection, climate change and energy efficiency all the way from its supply chain to internal process to customers.

Elaborating on other technologies that are in line with the Kingdom’s future plans, Hellberg said, one of them is Hydrogen production through water electrolysis, where renewable energy has the potential to be used optimally if every watt produced can be consumed or stored.

With industrial-scale water electrolysis, he said, hydrogen as a clean energy carrier can be produced by simply splitting water. Hydrogen can be stored, fed into the gas grid or used for chemicals production, Hellberg added.

thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions, he said, can deliver solutions for sustainable chemical value chains. Moreover, fully integrated plant concepts harness synergies and enable high-efficiency production of ammonia, methanol, SNG, fertilisers and much more.

He explained that their portfolio also includes plastics and bioplastics, and other downstream applications, as well. “All value chains gain in sustainability or can be completely CO2-free, such as ‘green ammonia’ derived from photovoltaic energy, water electrolysis, air, and a world-class ammonia process.”

“In short, we help our customers to get the most value out of their physical assts, and to ensure that they obtain the best possible performance from their plants and machines, we offer comprehensive solutions for the entire life-cycle of the plant,” concluded Hellberg.
