Business Bay Canal extension approved
Sheikh Mohammad approves the extension of the canal from Business Bay area to the Arabian Sea
The Business Bay Canal project will run from the Business Bay area across Safa Park and into the Arabian Sea.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has endorsed the extension of the Business Bay Canal Project, it was announced on Saturday.
Costing $408.3m, the project will see the Business Bay canal extended from the Business Bay area on Sheikh Zayed Road to the Arabian Sea, passing through Safa Park, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah 2.
The project is scheduled to be completed within two years.
“The extension of the Business Bay Canal is one of the key strategic projects undertaken by the RTA and encompasses the extension of the water canal from the Business Bay up to the Arabian Gulf in a waterway stretching 2.8km in length and with a width ranging from 80m to 100m,” explained Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the Roads and Transport Authority.
“The canal crosses Shaikh Zayed Road (before the Al Safa Interchange) and passes across the Safa Park, Al Wasl Road, and Jumeirah 2 to terminate at the Arabian Gulf,” Al Tayer added.
He added that the RTA would use the soil cement method to construct the banks of the canal, an engineering solution that would add an aesthetic appearance to the canal and its surroundings.
“The estimated cost of the Project is Dhs1.5 billion and due to the enormity of the project scale, and the need to expedite construction works, the project has been divided into three contracts,” he said.
“The first covers drilling and landscaping works as well as the construction of marine transit stations. The other two contracts relate to road and bridge projects, and the project is set for completion early 2015,” Al Tayer said.
The project will warrant the construction of bridges across the water canal, with some rising to 8.5m at key intersecting roads (ie: Sheikh Zayed Road (which has six lanes in each direction). In addition, Al Wasl road and Jumeirah Road will also get bridges.
