80% of tunnel work on Sharqiyah Expressway project completed

Oman’s Ministry of Transport and Communication has announced that work on the Sharqiyah Expressway project is in full swing, with 80% of the tunnels already completed.

Citing senior officials, a report in Times of Oman said that Nidab Tunnel has had its civil work and testing completed, with electro-mechanical work currently being executed.

The report added that a special construction system was used for the first time in Oman to complete the bridges – this included using specialised cranes for bridge construction work, carrying units as heavy as 100 tonnes. Furthermore, 90,000 cu m of concrete was used in the bridges, in addition to 15,000 tonnes of iron, it stated.

“The tunnels that are between 30- to 90-m-long have been fully completed,” said the officials.

“As for Al Uq tunnel, excavation work has been fully completed along with protection and rock stability work, and it is currently being padded with concrete,” they added in the report.
