Bahrain has announced the establishment of a Sustainable Energy Centre (SEC), driven by a Royal Decree by HH King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The SEC will be affiliated with the country’s Cabinet and will be supervised by the Minister of Electricity and Water.
According to a report by the Bahrain News Agency, the centre will undertake tasks and responsibilities related to providing technical support for the preservation of all kinds of sustainable energy sources. The centre will also secure and ensure the effective use of these energy sources, while encouraging investment into them, in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
The centre will focus on solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower and other natural sources of energy of a permanent and continuous nature, the decree specified.
The report said that the Sustainable Energy Centre will have a CEO with the rank of assistant undersecretary, who will report to the minister in charge.
The CEO will be appointed as per a Royal Decree, based on a proposal by the minister, for renewable four-year terms.
Last year, a senior official revealed that Bahrain had increased its target from 5% to 10% of electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2035.
