Al Maryah Island, formerly known as Sowwah Island, will be home to a mixed-use development that is 3.5m sqm in size.

The concept master plan for Al Maryah Island has been approved by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, it was announced on Tuesday.
Formerly known as Sowwah Island, the Abu Dhabi Municipality renamed the island in light of its economic and historical importance and geographic location. The plan, which covers more than 3.5 million square metres of mixed use development, includes commercial, residential, retail, hospitality and community spaced.
Set to be the centre of Abu Dhabi’s new Central Business District, the project is located at the midpoint between Mina Zayed, the upcoming developments at Reem Island and the new cultural district of Saadiyat Island.
Broadway Malyan’s client for the project is Mubadala Real Estate and Infrastructure, a Mubadala Development Company.
James Rayner, director of the Abu Dhabi based team of Broadway Malyan, the lead consultant and part project manager for Al Maryah Island, said that the work of his team, since 2009, and their understanding of local conditions, helped seal the deal.
“The green light for the concept master plan is a major milestone in the creation of this huge mixed-use development, with the success testament to a close partnering with the client and the skills, expertise and experience of our global master-planning experts, as well as their understanding of critical factors, such as climate and culture,” he explained.
Rayner added that the practice would now focus on new appointments to support the delivery of the next stages of the project. He said that Broadway Malyan would deliver detailed master plans for phases one to four of the scheme for MREI.
Although no specific dates were given, Rayner said that the plans were to be delivered ‘in the near future’.
The announcement of the planning approval follows Broad Malyan’s recent green light for a concept master plan for a new 680hectare waterfront community on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Designed for Aldar, the project will house 55,000 residents and was approved by the Urban Planning Council.
