The contractor implementing a flyover project in Jeddah is set to be fined for failing to hand over the project according to the set deadline which had been extended three times.
The project at the intersection between Prince Muhammad Bin Abdul Aziz and Prince Majed Bin Abdul Aziz roads saw the collapse of one section last month after the scaffolding bearing one of the precast beams gave way before it was fitted to the main structure.
The incident prompted the third extension of the deadline, the Jeddah mayoralty said.
The move to fine the contractor follows a report by a technical committee that investigated the accident, which indicated that the scaffolding collapse was due to rust in the metal bars, and that the beam might have been placed in a wrong angle.
The flyover project is crucial to the city as it is expected to ease the flow of traffic on both Prince Majed and Prince Muhammad roads.
