$1.66m mall to open in Bahrain

Mall was originally completed in 2007 but will finally open for business by the end of 2012

The mall had failed to attract a single tenant when it opened in 2008.

The Northern Municipality in Bahrain has taken over a$1.66m shopping complex after a private real estate firm that was appointed in 2008 failed to attract a single tenant.

The mall, which was completed in 2007, is finally expected to officially open at the end of 2012, the municipality director-general,Yousif Al Ghatam told the Gulf Daily News.

So far, the civic body rented out 60% of the leasable space, which it hopes to fill by the time the official opening takes place in December, said Al Ghatam.

“I don’t understand why we needed to bring in the company in the first place,” he said. “It was a decision taken by the previous municipality director-general, but I decided to pull the plug after discovering the real estate company didn’t rent out any shops.”
