Nakheel awards $162m mall contract to Metac General Contracting

Master developer Nakheel has awarded a $162m contract for the construction of Nad Al Sheba Mall. According to a statement from the developer, its new 1.4m sqft, $225m retail destination will be built by Metac General Contracting Company.

Once complete, the mall will have 200 shops, restaurant and entertainment outlets spread across 500,000sqft of leasable space. Construction is due to be completed in 2021. The mall is to have supermarkets (Spinneys and Union Co-op), department stores, a multi-screen cinema, medical clinic, fitness centre and a host of restaurants and cafes.

Nakheel says its new mall will be the ‘vibrant centrepiece of Dubai’s Nad Al Sheba district’. Once complete, the district is to have over 11,000 villas, which includes Nakheel’s own community of 1,572 villas. The developer notes that 468 of those villas are being built by Metac, under a $213m contract that was awarded in 2015.

Nad Al Sheba Mall is part of Nakheel’s $6bn expansion plans, which will ultimately take its total retail space to over 17m sqft. The developer’s upcoming projects across Dubai will add 12.5m sqft, through thousands of new shops, restaurants and unique attractions.
