Orascom Construction JV wins $180m contract for Furjairah International Airport expansion

Project scope includes the main infrastructure works for the airport expansion

Orascom Construction, the Egyptian-owned giant, has said that its joint venture in the UAE has been awarded a $180 million contract for the expansion of Fujairah International Airport.

In a statement on its website, the company said the project’s scope encompasses the main infrastructure works for the airport expansion. This includes the construction of a new air traffic control tower, the extension of the existing runway, a new emergency runway, rapid exit taxiways, and the installation of all airport systems.

In a filing to Egyptian Exchange (EGX), Orascom clarified that its stake in the project has reached 60%. It added that the project emphasises the company’s strategy on focusing on specialised projects, particularly in sectors where Orascom works both within and outside Egypt.

Earlier this year, a report in The National said that expansion plans for the Fujairah airport would see the runway upgraded to handle planes as large as the A380. It added that the project was being funded by the UAE Federal Government, in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Airports Company.

Orascom Construction is a public company listed on Nasdaq Dubai and EGX. It operates within the capital goods sector, with a focus on construction and engineering. It has operations across South and Central Asia, North America, Western Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
