HLG Qatar arm to design and build Siemens tram project
Firm to work on the line serving Doha Education City for Qatar Foundation
Leighton Contracting Qatar WLL, the Qatar arm of Habtoor Leighton Group, has been awarded a $124m contract for the design, construction, installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of the new, energy efficient, tram system pioneered by Siemens.
The total value of the project, which HLG describes as a “people mover system” is $412m and the firm’s work will cover the line serving Doha Education City for Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF).
“We’re delighted to be given the responsibility for the design and construction of one of Qatar’s first rail projects, and we look forward to demonstrating our rail expertise in what will be one of the world’s largest rail markets over the next decade,” commented Laurie Voyer HLG CEO and MD.
“By successfully delivering this project, we will place ourselves in an ideal position to secure additional work as part of the Doha Metro,” he added.
He also said that Qatar was a “key market” for the firm with 6000 people employed in the country and a public and private sector project portfolio, including the Al Shaqab Equestrian Academy in Doha, also for QF.
