Work starts on Dubai’s Meydan One Mall

Construction works have begun at the Meydan One Mall in Dubai, part of a wider mega development that is set to break several world records.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, officially launched the groundbreaking of the development, the state news agency WAM said.

The mall will be the central point of the wider Meydan One mega development.

It will feature 620 retail shops including two major department stores and a 131,150 square foot hypermarket, and “smart” features including a retractable skylight.

“With construction now underway, the Meydan One Mall is scheduled to be completed by 2020, in line with phase 1 of the Meydan One mega development,” said Meydan Chairman Saeed Humaid Al Tayer.

The mall will also include what is billed as the largest dancing water fountain in the world, measuring 380m long, a 1km indoor ski slope, and a 258,300 square foot indoor multi-purpose sports facility.

The wider 40.4 million square foot Meydan One development, located between Meydan and Al Khail Road, “is set to become Dubai’s number one attraction when the first phase opens in 2020,” a statement said.

Is is set to be home to more than 83,000 residents, and break at least seven world records and feature the 711m tall Dubai One tower.
