RTA begins $272m Dubai roads expansion contracts

Five year road expansion plan comes as Dubai looks to meet demographic and urban growth

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has awarded two contracts for the construction of internal roads in the Emirate, signalling the start of a road network expansion worth more than $272m.

The expansion comes as Dubai looks to meet the challenges posed by its burgeoning demographic and urban growth and as such, the two contracts cover the construction of roads in Al Qusais 3 and Al Qouz 4 at the cost of $10.34m.

“The two projects represent the initial phase of the Five Year Plan 2012-2016 endorsed by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for paving internal roads at several residential districts in Dubai Emirate at a cost of about one billion dirham.”

“The initial phase of the Plan covers five residential communities, namely: Hatta and Al Qusais 3, in addition to Al Quoz 2, 3 and 4,” said Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and executive director of the RTA.

He added that construction internal roads at Al Quoz 4 would comprise the construction of roads that extend eight kilometres, with lighting and parking works, along with storm water drainage services also included within a total cost of $4.08m.

Construction works on that project are scheduled to start within the week and are scheduled for completion in the first half of 2013.

“Earlier this month, the RTA awarded a contract for constructing internal roads at Al Warqaa 1, 2, 3 and 4 at a cost of around $42.64m. The project includes construction and lighting works of roads stretching 125km; comprising the construction of 89km long roads and improvements made on existing roads extending 36km,” Al Tayer explained.

“It also includes the construction of roadside parking slots, parking works for some mosques and public schools in the area, and all necessary road works such as road marking and traffic signals,” he elaborated.

The Five Year Plan for Constructing Internal Roads at Residential Districts in Dubai covers the construction of internal roads in about 16 areas where urbanisation rates range from 20% to 80%, though the drop in some areas is as low as 5%.

Phase I of the project, the cost of which is about $40.8m, covers five residential communities. Phase II will start in 2013 at a cost of about $38.11m and will cover the areas of Muhaisna 2 and Al Barsha South 1 and 2. Phase III will start in 2014 and will oversee the construction of roads in three districts, Al Mamzar, Al Nahdah 1 and Oud Mateena 2, at a cost of around $35.39m.

Phase IV will start in 2015 and will cover the construction of roads in three districts as well, Nad El Sheba 4, Oud Mateena 1 and Khawaneej 2 at a cost of about $38m.

Finally, Phase V will start in 2016 at a cost of $68.06m and will cover road works in Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1, Al Qusais Industrial Areas 3, 4 and 5, and also Al Awir 1.
