Abu Dhabi approves $190m market project, infra works

A project to renovate the Khor Al Maqta market in Abu Dhabi and undertake infrastructure works in the surrounding area has been approved by authorities in the UAE capital.

The Abu Dhabi Executive Committee approved the award of the project to develop the traditional market to contractors based on a ‘musataha’ agreement with the private sector worth AED 700 million ($190m), including the infrastructure work, according to state news agency WAM.

The project is located at Khor Al Maqta near the Mussafah Bridge, and its architecture is inspired by Emirati heritage.

The market, which will be linked to a new tunnel, extends over 248,000 square metres and 30% of its space will be used for cultural activities.

The agreement “forms part of the approach adopted by the Abu Dhabi Government to develop partnerships with the private sector”, WAM reported.

The committee also approved awarding maintenance work, restoration work, and additions to internal roads in Khalifa City, Shakhbut City, Al Raha Beach and Al Falah to contractors. That project is valued at AED 27 million and includes regular maintenance work for roads and other features such as traffic signs, pavements and asphalt.
