Abu Dhabi is set to award a contract for a AED 39 million ($10.6m) construction project to upgrade the rainwater drainage system, according to the UAE state news agency WAM.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport and the Abu Dhabi City Municipality plan to undertake the works during the third quarter of this year, with the project set for completion two years after the start date.

The phased project covers completing the construction of rainwater drainage networks, along with the required pumping stations in various parts of Abu Dhabi city.

The Municipality “will finalise the awarding procedures and task the contractor to start the project works according to the pre-set project schedule,” it was reported.

The rainwater drainage project involves modifying existing rainwater drainage works in order to improve the efficiency, increase the drainage capacity of rainwater and ground water, and thus prevent the chance of flooding.
