The Sheppard Robson designed Siemens headquarters at Masdar City has been named winner of the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Award 2012.
Coming first in the offices category, the building has been designed to reduce energy consumption by 45% and water by 50%, on ASHRAE standards.
It is the second architectural accolade for Masdar, which has also been awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) international award for architectural excellence.
“Siemens Middle East Headquarters was designed from the inside out – led by the ambition to achieve efficiency, rather than a predetermined aesthetic, the resulting building is both commercially successful and environmentally sound: a truly sustainable solution aligned with Masdar’s vision for the low carbon city,” commented partner and head of offices for Sheppard Robson, Mark Kowal.
The category demanded entries based on the contribution a new building will make to its “context” specifically in terms of urban deisgn and human qualities, in addition to the building’s attributes towards enhancing workplace productivity.
A statement from the jury read: “This is a thorough investigation of the design of large floorplate space in an extreme climate, with a well-explained proposition emerging. The ambition for a LEED Platinum rating means the project will be followed by many designers and clients with great interest.”
Masdar CEO Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the award was testament to the “innovative and sustainable architectural design Masdar promotes”.
Siemens Middle East headquarters in Masdar City will become operational in 2013. The prize will be awarded March 7 in Cannes, France.
