Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of roadworks to widen a stretch of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) near Al Maktoum International Airport.

Under the project, the number of lanes has been doubled from three to six along a 7km-long stretch of the highway, running from the Al Maktoum International Airport roundabout to Jebel Ali-Lehbab roundabout. The authority will open the new stretch of road on Friday.

The RTA has also completed 60% of work on the Al Houdh Junction project between the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Yalayis Road at a cost of AED227 million ($61.8m).

Set for completion in Q4 2016, the Al Houdh Junction Project is situated at the western part of Dubai, bordering the Arabian Ranches Interchange to the north, and the Trucks Road to the south. The project encompasses upgrading the existing Al Houdh roundabout from a signalized junction into a flyover accommodating the tracks of Etihad Rail.

The project also includes the widening of the E311 from three to six lanes in each direction along an 11 km stretch, extending from Al Houdh roundabout to the junction leading to Al Maktoum International Airport.

The project contractor has completed 60% of construction on the flyover, as well as lighting works and utility lines. The completion rate has reached 90% in the widening of the road from Al Maktoum International Airport roundabout to Al Houdh roundabout.

When completed, Al Houdh Junction Project will result in smooth traffic flow for vehicles coming from Al Yalayis Road heading east towards the Dubai Investment Park (DIP), and west towards the Sheikh Zayed Road and Jebel Ali Free Zone.

Al Houdh Junction Project is part of the second phase of a project to improve and widen Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, costing about AED940 million ($256m).

Last year, the RTA also completed the widening and improvement of Al Yalayis Road linking the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (at Al Houdh roundabout) with the Emirates Road via DIP.
