Cyclists participating in Dubai Tour, the city’s largest exclusive cycle race ever, were caught off-guard as a flames billowed from a residential building in the city on Saturday.

A report by local daily Gulf News states a fire started in a single apartment of the building near Al Nasr Leisureland, running parallel to the road that leads to Al Maktoum Bridge.

This incident follows the Civil Defence’ recent announcement pertaining to the installation of interlinked alert systems in all new residential developments across the country.

“The new system will automatically alert the nearest fire station in case of fire any emergency in any house,” director of the Preventive Safety Department at Dubai Civil Defence, Lt Col Jamal Ahmad Ebrahim had said.

“Firefighters will be alerted even if there are people at home or not.”

An earlier report by the daily said the fire had started in an air-conditioner pipe, but was contained within minutes. No immediate injuries or casualties were reported.
